"Human beings fall easily into despair, and from the very beginning we invented stories that enabled us to place our lives in a larger setting, that revealed an underlying pattern, and gave us a sense that, against all the depressing and chaotic evidence to the contrary, life had meaning and value."

"Myths and legends die hard in America. We love them for the extra dimension they provide, the illusion of near-infinite possibility to erase the narrow confines of most men's reality. Weird heroes and mould-breaking champions exist as living proof to those who need it that the tyranny of the rat race is not yet final."
-- Hunter S. Thompson

Don't all myths have some basis in history? The function of the myth is to document history.

Myths are rooted in psychological and cultural history, not necessarily based in objective historic events. Epic tales (like the Song of Roland) which were originally presented orally are more likely to be based in actual events.

" Around 400 BC the Athenian philosopher Plato coined the word 'mythologia' in order to distinguish between imaginative accounts of divine actions and factual descriptions of events, supernatural or otherwise. Although he lived in an age that was increasingly scientific in outlook, and no longer inclined to believe every detail related about gods and goddesses, Plato recognized the power that resided in myth, and warned his followers to beware of its seductive charm."

Myths are clues to deeper meaning, and reveal the risks and methods of inner and collective journeys in symbolic form.

This function is compromised when myths are interpreted literally or hijacked for personal gain (e.g. blog traffic).

#8: do you have something to contribute on the function of myth?

well, i think so, but that doesn't depend only on my point of view.
I didn't place the link to get traffic, there is a section there, i don't know if you read it, merrmaidmaker.wordpress.com/the-idea/ [merrmaidmaker.wordpress.com/the-idea/] , that i think has to do with this topic. besides, isn't this site based on links in the first place? i also think that images and not only text can speak in any particlular topic. Let me know if you think i'm wrong.
