Indeed it can be argued that mythology captures deeper resonacnes of truth than current materialistic science, which is why people like Richard Dawkins are poor guides to the nature of truth. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has an interest in the mystical/spiritual aspects of mythology.
My area of particular interest is Greek mythology. |

Richard Dawkins is extremely lucid in his thoughts and expresses himself well so unsure why he should be maligned in your post?
Mythology may contain some underlying truths but do not think it can be described as a guide to life.
But then all are allowed an opinion and a forum for expressing it.
It's just some of us are right!! :-) |

He offers interesting models of biological phenomena free of theism, but certainly does not offer (or pretend to if I read him correctly) the last word when it comes to the absolute nature of consciousness and ultimate reality. |

Wish someone in spellchecker world would keep up though. Don't think Mr D is egotistical enough to think he has the last word; would be a self inflicted wound indicating his own omniscience? :-) Anyway hope somebody points out my obvious stupidity, and hence keeps the ball rolling. Picking on my use of English is far too prosaic use something more intellectual! |

Having read a lot of books by Zecharia Sitchin (amongst others), believing all of his theories or not, there is increasing evidence that in pre-historical times, Sumerian and earlier, that there were more advanced civilizations thanthose of Egypt and later Greece. The Annunaki or Nephilim are well described by Sitchin's translations, and I believe they may have come from another planet as he does, but even putting that aside, you cannot deny that with every year there are more and more archaelogical finds that point to mankind being older than was previously thought.
What if the ancients, the Gods Of Old did have flying machines, and higher technology. What if they did clone man as a hybrid from creatures on earth and themselves (as in the story of Adam and Eve but far more detailed in the Sumerian version).
I wonder if we will ever know, whether some amazing discovery in the next few years will prove that Atlantis did exist etc...
And then what........... |

Myths are wisdom artifacts, precipitates of collective experience and the transcendent power of the human imagination.
Came upon an article last week which dates a human footprint in Mexico to 40,000 years ago, far earlier than most estimates for the first migrations. I remain open to the possibility of relatively advanced civilizations yet undiscovered in the human past.
Our 'hybrid' nature, combining elements of both ape and angel has been commented on by philosophers throughout the ages. The only god necessary for this unique alchemy is DNA, found in all living things. This human awareness, whatever it is, emerged quite naturally out of the creative potential of the universe. Even if you would posit gods who tinkered and 'humanized' us via recombinant DNA as our scientists do today, the gods themselves would very likely be a product of DNA. Why wouldn't their unique powers be attributable to a previous race who had tinkered with them ad infinitum.
Evidence inspires belief.
The origins and nature of awareness are a wonderful mystery.
Myths provide models and metaphors in the search for meaning. |

Recall a very good horizon program on him and his theories, what's he doing these days, selling snake oil??
Must admit my view is mythology has some underlying message to illustrate life from life, rather than indicating the existence of bored extra terrestrials trying to make life more exciting by breeding with humans!
Does remind me somewhat of the passage in hitchhikers where Ford is explaining visitations to Arthur.
Anyway no doubt the wrath of the gods/aliens will mean I'll get zapped or smote by a laser.
May we all reach enlightenment one day! |
